Songstress Rebecca Martin solo again: The Growing Season reviewed
by Bailey Pennick posted November 10, 2008
With the release of her fourth solo album after her short career as one half of the musical duo Once Blue (the other half being Jesse Harris), Rebecca Martin reflects on her life and lets us into her world through The Growing Season. The thirteen track jazz album is a collection of personal ballads that deal with the issues of motherhood and being a satisfied woman in life. While Rebecca's inviting voice and insightful lyrics make each track a diary entry in song, the entire album falls flat because of its repetitive sound and boring rhythms.

"The Space In A Song To Think" gives an intriguing start to The Growing Season, featuring some of the best lyrics and harmonies of the album. Rebecca's voice has an endearingly short range as she explains the moral of the album: "Let this be learning/That we're all allowed/To take what we need/And to give what is needed." With the dominant base and the vocals that are just a little bit off, "The Space In A Song To Think" is the perfect introduction to this journey of her life through song.

Sadly, the rest of the album falls short of this simple start. Following her through songs about sex such as "A Million Miles", and raising her son "Just A Boy", becomes tedious and forgetful. While it is clear that The Growing Season is about "motherhood, about living in the world and living in your body," Rebecca Martin fails at making us want to listen and join her on this trip down memory lane.
