Shiny new discs (pt.2): Albums out 9/23 & 9/30
by Nick Giancola posted October 16, 2008
BLAST FROM THE (RECENT) PAST: DISCS OUT 9 / 30 / 2008
The Dead release a couple of new live albums recorded in 1978. Rocking the Cradle: Egypt 1978 and Road Trips Vol. 1 Num. 4. The latter was recorded at Winterland Arena in San Francisco.

This one's really interesting: produced and recorded by Brian Wilson in his home in 1969, psych-poet and friend of Wilson, Stephen J. Kalinich rambles off on spoken word as Wilson accompanies with minimalist background music. The result of this strange collaboration, A World of Peace Must Come, has never been released before. (A big thank you to Light In the Attic Records for uncovering this one.) Listen to "Be Still". Do it.

Following up 2005's The Secret Migration, Mercury Rev are back with their 7th full-length album Snowflake Midnight.

4 by Dungen.

Innerpartysystem's self-titled debut LP.

Way to Normal, Ben Folds' third solo album.

The Power of Negative Thinking: B-Sides & Rarities from the Jesus & Mary Chain. This one includes early live performances, demos, bootlegs, and other b-side material.

New from jazz trio Medeski, Martin & Wood: Radiolarians 1. This is the first in a three part Radiolarian Series consisting of music composed while touring the Northeastern States from February 19-29, 2008.

Tom Morello is back, in solo form, with another release from the Nightwatchman (although this time he wants to be known as Tom Morello: The Nightwatchman). It's called The Fabled City and you can listen to the single "Whatever It Takes" over here (it's a streamer WMA so, sadly, this one's for Windows users only).

This is one of my favorites from this week, emcee 2Mex and Mars Volta keyboardist Ikey Owens are Look Daggers and their debut LP is titled Suffer In Style.

Out My Window by Koushik. Listen: "Lying In the Sun" mp3.

Slime and Reason, the fourth LP from emcee Roots Manuva. Watch: "Again and Again" on YouTube.

Drunk Like Bible Times by Dear and the Headlights. I thought it was a pretty cool title until I read bassist Chuckie Duff's explanation: "it just makes us laugh and people are free to read whatever meaning they want into it. It's just a good name for what it is - a party record." Okay.
A LITTLE FURTHER BACK: 9 / 23 / 2008
Alright I'll start with the big one this week: Cold War Kids' sophomore album Loyalty to Loyalty completely rocks. I wasn't even the biggest fan of their debut but this one is blowing my mind. Some cool links: RCRD LBL exclusive track "Bullies Always Win", "Something Is Not Right With Me" Sarah Palin edition on YouTube.

Also pretty cool this week: Starfucker's self-titled debut. Listen: "Pop Song" mp3.

24 Postcards In Full Colour by Max Richter.

Recorded in 1967, Live In London and Paris by Otis Redding.

Live In Gdansk from David Gilmour. This live album was recorded in 2006 while touring in Poland.

I didn't know this guy was still making music: that ex-House of Pain emcee Everlast is back with his fifth solo album, titled Love, War and the Ghost of Whitey Ford.

Dear Science by TV on the Radio.

Instrumental rock outfit Mogwai's sixth studio album The Hawk Is Howling.

Acid Tongue from Jenny Lewis.

Only by the Night by Kings of Leon.
