On Of Montreal's "Id Engager"
by Cy Fard posted October 9, 2008
Of Montreal releases "Id Engager" in support of their highly anticipated ninth studio album, Skeletal Lamping, which comes only a year after 2007's well received Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer?. Mastermind ringleader Kevin Barnes had been touting the upcoming album as one that is all over the place musically, treading all sorts of waters that the band has swam in over the course of their diverse history. "Id Engager" doesn't seem like the initial single that would convey this point however, as it's a fairly standard synth funk tune that the band nearly perfected on their previous record with. And by no means are they even searching for perfection on this song. The shimming melodies breathe under a funky bass and synthesizer-drenched rhythm, but it's the odd breaks throughout the single that are the most enjoyable moments, because they are surprising in a positive way. With a fairly standard chorus featuring oddball background vocals hitting schizophrenically, the song is playful enough to entertain, but not as bold or striking as, say, "Disconnect the Dots" or "Suffer for Fashion." It's certainly hard to gauge an Of Montreal record by its singles, so take the surface with a grain of salt, and prepare to dig in on October 21. Until then, hang out with Barnes's alter ego Georgie Fruit on this worthy first track.
