Shiny new discs (pt.1): Albums out this week
by Nick Giancola posted October 8, 2008
First off: sorry for my little absence. Shiny New Discs is back this week with a long list of noteworthy new releases out Tuesday, October 7th. Oh, but don't think I've forgotten about the past two weeks! I want to cover all the amazing music that has been released since my last post but so many new discs came out yesterday that I'll have to stick to this week here. I'll be posting an accompanying article shortly with albums from 9/23 and 9/30. We've got some good stuff this week ladies and gentlemen »
RELEASES FOR 10 / 7 / 2008
IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER ... BECAUSE ITS MORE FUN THAT WAY

Something new from post-rockers Grails: their second LP to be released on Temporary Residence Ltd, Doomsdayer's Holiday paints a beautiful instrumental soundscape. Expect some coverage of this one on Everythingrock in the near future.

Speaking of beautiful soundscapes, German pianist/composer Hauschka (real name: Volker Bertelmann) releases his fourth, Ferndorf.

Deerhoof's latest, Offend Maggie. Out on the Kill Rock Stars label.

Another World, an EP from Antony and the Johnsons. Look out for the LP The Crying Light in 2009.

Un Dia, Argentinian singer-songwriter Juana Molina's fifth album. The album was recorded almost entirely by herself in her home outside Buenos Aires (one guitarist joined her for a bit).

Minimalist composer Philip Glass gets the treatment he deserves: Glass Box is a 10 CD retrospective (packed in an awesome box) housing some of Glass' finest work.

British rapper Mike Skinner, aka The Streets, is back with his latest Everything Is Borrowed. Download single "The Escapist" and check out the video over here.

Straight outta Columbia: Nacional Records delivers Picotero, U.S. debut from electronic duo Monareta. They're playing CD release shows: LA on Oct 11 (The Echo) & NY on Oct 25 (Fontana's).

White Van Music by Jake One. Out on Rhymesayers this one features appearances from MF Doom, Young Buck, Busta Rhymes, Slug (of Atmosphere), and many more...

OH (Ohio) by Lambchop.

Morning Tide by indie poppers the Little Ones.

Oasis hits us with their newest thing: Dig Out Your Soul.

City of Refuge, the latest from freak-folk guy Raymond Raposa (you may know him better as Castanets).

On the heavier side of things, this week brings us something new from Rise Against titled Appeal to Reason.

And Life Is Not A Waiting Room, the fourth LP from Senses Fail.

The self-titled debut from Lemonade. Described as "psychedelic, electronic punks," this Bay Area group is worth checking out. (Especially if you have a hankering for a certain type of corn chip...) Take a listen: "Sunchips" mp3.

Life Like by the Rosebuds. Watch "Life Like"

Gregory and the Hawk's debut Moenie and Kitchi is out on FatCat.

New from the Hardly Art label: Boston trio Pretty & Nice release Get Young. Take a listen: "Tora Tora Tora" mp3.

CYNE's fifth album Pretty Dark Things. (In case you were wondering, it stands for "Cultivating Your New Experience".) Listen: "Sound of Your Voice (CYNE Remix)" mp3. Watch: "Calor" on YouTube.

Out today on VICE, Japanese Motors self-titled debut. Listen: "Spendin' Days" mp3. Some live videos courtesy VBS.tv.
