Though it relies too heavily on the tried and true bag of rock and roll tricks, You'll Never Understand This Band the Way That I Do is a solid pop/rock album falling somewhere between My Morning Jacket's latest mess and The Helio Sequence's amiable Keep Your Eyes Ahead in terms of style and quality. Borrowing heavily from the Beatles' Abbey Road era with detours into such diverse territories as The Moody Blues ("Spanish Village By the Sea") and Bob Seeger ("All on Me"), one could accuse The Shys of overt retrogression, but should not dismiss the notion that this band may prove to have some surprises up their collective sleeve. All they need is a lighter touch and maybe a little amnesia.
