Interviewed: The Fall of Troy macks on Kimberly Haddad
by Kimberly Haddad posted August 8, 2008
Kimberly Haddad sat down with all the members of The Fall of Troy before a show of theirs at The Glass House in Pomona, California.
Kimberly Haddad: Hey guys how are you tonight? How's the tour been treating you so far and what's it been like touring with Foxy Shazam, and The Dear Hunter?

Thomas Erak: It's been fun, it's been awesome. All the bands on this tour have been so pleasant to be around. They are such good musicians and such good bands.

Andrew Forsman: It's been really good, we're all smiling and really happy.

KH: What have been some of your best and worst moments so far?

AF: Bourbon Street was a highlight!

TE: Bourbon Street was definitely a highlight but the worst is when Casey from The Dear Hunter just walked into the room right now. That probably bummed me out more than anything ever (laughs). No the worst thing that happened was our van broke down in Canada.

KH: What happened?

TE: Well it was fun. We got to ride in a bus the rest of the tour.

AF: I uh…drove the van into a curb at a Wendy's drive through and the curb was deceptively high, I got stuck on that, so me and our tour manager tried to get it out and we bent the axel and the tire popped about a half an hour later.

KH: Awe, that's no good, I'm sorry. So you guys ready for tonight's show?

AF: Yes!

KH: How do you think it's gonna go?

AF: Awesome!

TE: It's gonna suck, it's gonna be really bad cause we suck and we're horrible (laughs).

KH: Oh please, stop fishing for compliments mister! You know you kids don't suck. (laughs)

TE: It's gonna be fantabulous. I just made that up myself. You can use that if you want.

KH: Oh yeah, are you gonna copyright it?

TE: No, you can use it if you want to. You can even tell people you made it up.

KH: Oh, I won't do that, you gotta get some credit.

AF: Fantabulastic!

KH: Tell me how the band formed and the meaning behind your name.

AF: Um, me and Thomas knew each other from drumline and we said let's start a band that's really mellow. Then we got together and realized that wasn't gonna work. Then we needed a name so we flipped through a history textbook and had Thomas' teacher's assistant in the class put a finger down on the page. We got one name, The Thirty Years of War. And then we decided to do it again.

TE: And then we had a bass player, that didn't work out and we met this guy Frank here, and he works out.

AF: And he is awesome. That's pretty much our lives up to this point.

TE: That's the most descript story our band has ever told.

KH: By the way, I'm loving the dreads Frank.

Frank Black: Thank you!

AF: We all love the dreads.

TE: He's been trying to cut them before this tour and I was like you are not. He was hysterical! I was like dude, I don't know man, I don't know. I don't know if you're gonna work out man if you cut the dreads off (laughs).

FB: I don't know man, I don't know (laughs while mocking Thomas).

KH: I understand there are two EP's in progress for this year? Is this true?

AF: We are trying to set the record straight on this one.

TE: We wanted to do that but it just wasn't gonna work out and we kinda just ended up starting to write just one big full length album.

KH: Alright, thank you for clearing that up. You guys have an anticipated date for the album release?

AF: I wanted to get it out by January '09, but I mean you never know. Shit, I really wanted it out early next year though.

TE: I think we all do. As soon as possible would be the date.

KH: Can you tell me about the recording process for your albums?

AF: I record the drums with the other two guys and then uh…

TE: Then we add everything else and get in the layers.

AF: And sprinkle magic dust on it and then it turns gold and then we sprinkle more and it turns into a rainbow.

TE: And then you have our records.

KH: Are there any elements from your previous records to be seen on your upcoming one?

TE: Nope, not a single one. We're just gonna put out a Nirvana cover record (laughs).

KH: Is that so?

AF: No, I mean we're always gonna be The Fall of Troy. I think you'll probably be able to tell if you listen to our previous albums, you should be able to hear the new stuff from the old.

TE: There will definitely be a few new changes since Frank is in the band now, more harmony, and more vocals.

KH: What's your favorite song to perform live?

TE: Most of our new stuff really.

AF: "The Vomiting Winter." It's a challenge and when we pull it off it's awesome!

TE: Yeah, definitely. It's like American Gladiators. If you could do it right, you're like the ultimate and you have guts, but if you don't than yeah.

KH: I am aware that Tim Ward, the former bassist of the band, does the album art and merchandise. Is he gonna continue doing it for the next album?

AF: Will see, I mean maybe. I would love for him to draw stuff up and see where it goes.

KH: How did that get initiated?

TE: He just started drawing and we were like "go for it" you know, see what happens, and we liked it.

KH: You have one of his designs as a tattoo don't you?

TE: Yeah, and the diamonds from the other record (showing me his forearm). You gotta have some bling!

KH: (laughs) Well, they look really good.

TE: I look really good?

KH: No! Your tattoos!

AF: Ohhhh yeah! There you go, she thinks you look good (laughs)! You're taking some initiative!

TE: You think I'm attractive, what (giggles hysterically)!

KH: Come on now, I gotta be professional here (laughs). So what are some of the bands influences in terms of making your music?

FB: Vaux!

TE: Why do you say that all the time, they aren't that big of an influence to us as a band?

FB: For me they are!

AF: Pretty Girls Make Graves, what'd you want me to say, The Beatles (laughs), Nirvana.

TE: Nirvana, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, At The Drive In, Modest Mouse, Get up Kids, Appleseed Cast, Sunny Day Real Estate.

KH: Obviously you guys are pretty busy touring but are there any bands you guys would like to or are going to see anytime soon?

AF: Oh yeah, for sure. I wanna see Pinback really bad.

TE: I miss seeing the Blood Brothers live if that's of any consolation. I'd like to see Radiohead and Bjork. I've never seen them before.

KH: I'm seeing Radiohead in August!

TE: Really? You know who else, Air would be awesome, or Daft Punk. I wanna see Pedro the Lion again.

KH: You guys got any big plans after the tour is over?

TE: Children, families, babies.

AF: Disneyland!

TE: And babies, Disneyland and babies.

FB: I'm anticipating Europe actually.

AF: Yeah, were going to Europe. We're playing two festivals in Germany, a few clubs shows in England. Then we're gonna come back, take a couple weeks off and start hacking away at that new record!

TE: And then after that we're gonna go on tour with Say Anything cause that's what I wanna do.

KH: Wait, so you guys haven't started the record yet?

AF:We have like four songs…

TE: No, I have five, I mean, in my head (laughs). Well I have ideas. I'm like August Rush man, I just like think of music when I see things. Have you seen that?

KH: Nope.

TE: No! Damnit! What is wrong with all you music people not seeing August Rush?

AF: I've never even seen it but I never heard of it until like yesterday.

TE: It's like Mr. Holland's Opus. It's really good. Have you seen that?

KH: No…

AF: What!

TE: What are you doing? Richard Dreyfuss? Who are you (laughs)?

KH: Hey that's not very nice!

TE: Well, you look good (giggles).

KH: Eh! You better watch what you say, I gotcha on my recorder!

TE: That's ok, that's fine, you look good.

AF: Yeah there's no problem with looking good.

TE: Yeah, you look really good, you look together, well groomed and nice. Your necklace is really nice.

FB: You have really nice eyebrows.

KH: Wait what? Did you just say I had nice eyebrow (laughs)? That is the most random thing I have ever heard!

AF: Frank is the most particular person ever and eyebrows are his thing, if he doesn't like them he won't even talk to you.

KH: What! Really (laughs). Ok stop staring at them you're making me feel so awkward right about now.

TE: Awe she is blushing!

KH: No, it's just really hot in here (laughs). So is there anything else you'd like to tell the readers?

AF: Just be nice. Come to our shows.

TE: Be safe, say please and sorry and thank you.

AF: Mind your P's and Q's.

TE: Take care of yourselves and each other.

AF: One love.

KH: Alright guys that's all I have left, I hope you guys have a great time tonight. Thank you for giving me a bit of your time.
