by John Vining posted June 17, 2008
News for the week beginning June 9th, 2008.
» EMI-gration, pt. 3: The Rolling Stones are set to leave EMI for Live Nation, the all-inclusive deal-makers that have grabbed a hold of Madonna, Jay-Z, U2 and others. This would follow EMI's loss of Paul McCartney and Radiohead, along with smaller acts. Also in EMI: EMI gets rid of some of its Mexico staff; EMI and the BBC make a deal that will allow them to share archives.

» Metallica's management apparently told a few sites to take down reviews of the rough cuts that Metallica had released. When Metallica got back from a tour they told their managers that was stupid, and then linked to the reviews. Also: Metallica has cryptically released the title for their newest record: "Dead Magnetic."

» Copy-love, in short: The RIAA is sneakily upping its settlement fees; MediaDefender (the group that fucked up the legit Rev3) is working on branded mp3's to be distributed via p2p networks; Canadian new copyright law makes legal many every-day activities; US thinks about a lemme-look-at-your-tech bill.

» Coldplay, in short: Coldplay's new rekkid, Viva la Vida, moves tons of copies; Coldplay has been accussed of knowingly stealing a tune from a little band called Creaky Boards; Chris Martin storms out of a radio interview, and says religious tones come from school assemblies; Production snags slow down upcoming Coldplay tour.

» The Rest, in short: John McCain uses "Johnny B. Goode" but Obama gets Berry's support (doesn't this always happen?); Amy Winehouse rerecords "Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes" with everyone's favorite racial slurs; R. Kelly is acquitted; Kid Rock gets dehydrated; Judas Priest preps its concept record, Nostradamus; 7k tickets left for Glastonbury; Neil Young preps doc about friction with fans over political music; Boy George to play for his sanitation-working friends; The three big torrent search sites now collectively grab a billion page views a month; U2 auctions off their Basquiat work; Joan Jett gets a signature Gibson guitar.

» Obits, in short: Jazz musician Esbjorn Svensson, 44 (scuba accident).
