The Racontuers bring more... Racontuing
by David Buker posted April 27, 2008
If there is one word to describe the new Raconteurs album, Consolers of the Lonely, it is without a doubt "more": more dynamic, more energetic, more cohesive, more upfront, and more importantly…more rock n' roll. After two albums, the Raconteurs have begun to sound like a group of musicians that know not only who they are, but what they do best. Lead singer/songwriters Jack White and Brendan Benson are working efficiently as a unit and are using the band's duel vocal quality to its full advantage. Tracks like "Salute Your Solution" and the album's title track allow both vocalists to complement each other and maintain, in a sense, an open musical dialogue. Individually, White and Benson have each continued the quality songwriting of the band's first album, Broken Boy Soldiers, but both seem to be creating with a more aggressive attitude, crafting a style that focuses on catchy guitar riffs, melodic piano interludes, and an undeniably powerful sound. The inclusion of both trumpet and violin as melody instruments also seems to speak to the overall feeling of creative freedom that defines much of Consolers of the Lonely.
Bassist Jack Lawrence and drummer Patrick Keeler, who make up the Raconteurs' rhythm section, continue to prove that the years they spent playing together in the Greenhornes have really paid off. Throughout Consolers of the Lonely, Lawrence and Keeler provide a polished backdrop that keeps the band sounding like a rock n' roll act should, tight and steady. The band's newly adopted, grove oriented style plays directed into the strengths of the rhythmic duo and allows for a more upfront and direct sound.
Overall, Consolers of the Lonely sounds like an album from a band that has realized that there is one, simple formula for making great music: play and play well. The Raconteurs seem to be working without complicating things and are allowing their sound to flow naturally. So far, this process has been nothing but successful and hopefully "more" is exactly what will continue to come from the Raconteurs.
