BOTWOT: Give him a damn Pulitzer!
by John Vining posted April 14, 2008
News for the week April 7th - 14th, 2008.
» Bob Dylan has received an honorary (read: fake) Pulitzer prize from the Pulitzer folks. The prize was meant to congratulate Dylan for his lyrics and ever-present effect on popular music, and was not meant to award him for his recent memoir. Dylan was the first rock act to be awarded the prize, which has previously been reserved for writers and classical and jazz musicians. Also: Dylan announces some European tour dates.

» It has been reported that Guns N' Roses have actually finished the record Dr. Pepper teased them about. It's hard to imagine that someone named Axl Rose took his art seriously enough to spend 14 years (and $13 million) on a record. Also about GNR: Axl might also get his own show about creation of the belated record; Robin Finck, former GNR and NIN guitarist, has rejoined NIN.

» Charlie Daniels, who wrote the song "The Devil Went Down to Georgia," is now very angry that his song is being used in Guitar Hero III. Daniels, who no longer has rights to the song, said that "The song, 'The Devil Went Down To Georgia', which I wrote, is supposed to be a lighthearted novelty about a fiddling contest between a country boy and the devil and the devil always loses....I would never grant permission for some company to create a video game version of a song I wrote in which the devil wins a contest." His disapproval seems to stem from the fact that young kids are now playing the devil in their living rooms, and losing. Also: Europe will now finally be getting their own version of Rock Band.

» Too-hip-to-quit George Michael is reportedly paying graffiti artist Banksy to paint parts of his house. Michael, who has already purchased two canvas pieces by the artist, will apparently leave when Banksy comes to work, in order to preserve his anonymity.

» The now-failing EMI has hired Google executive Douglas Merrill to help save them. Merrill is intent on figuring out how to make labels survive, and part of that might be understanding that file-sharing is "not necessarily bad": "There is academic research that shows file sharing is a good thing for artists and not necessarily bad. We should do a bunch of experiments to find out what the business model is."

» Quotables: "Animals have the same capacity to feel fear and pain that humans do, of course, and they should have the right not to be cruelly attacked and killed by a has-been singer."

» Festivals, in short: Jay-Z has been rumored to be pulling out of Glastonbury, but Glastonbury founder Michael Eavis says that that's false; Tickets for Glastonbury haven't yet sold out, which is strange considering they usually do after a few hours; Lollapallooza announces its stellar line-up; Kanye West will headline this year's Global Gathering festival; Leonard Cohen may pull out of Bennicasim; Prince was added as a very-late Coachella headliner, for a reported $4.8 million.

» The Rest, in short: Elvis Costello says his record will come out on CD after all; High School Musical 4 is on its way!!!!!; Elton John helps to raise $2.5 million for Hill-dog; Social-networking site imeem has acquired SNOCAP, a service used for digital licensing and copyright management; A plant version of Ringo is beheaded; 50 Cent being sued for being too gangsta; Shel Silverstein reissues are on their way; Vanilla Ice keeps it fresh with domestic abuse; B. Spears fender-bends.
