The Burning Hour (Test Your Reflex)
by Taylor Hofmann posted February 27, 2008
With an intuitive sense for structure, young rockers Test Your Reflex are sure to have a fast reaction time. Writing for two years before laying down any tracks is proof of a driven band that refuses to settle-add to the mix a concoction of affable songwriting talent and unbridled enthusiasm.

Aged between 19 and 21, this five-piece outfit illustrates a strong musical maturity well beyond their years. The Burning Hour is a sparkling, newly excavated jewel. The sonic richness and emotional depth of the tracks is artfully exposed, which is a nice contrast to Test Your Reflex's sometimes overly dramatic peers. As a whole, no slippery pitfalls manage to sneak up on this debut. The arrangements and layering of the tracks seep from song to song. The band's melodies are posed to pounce at any moment, and the effect is more invigorating than it is menacing.

Surprisingly enough, RC's skilled guitar work isn't always the focus of the songs. Each musician in this band pulls their weight-a further indication of their advanced musical understanding. First-rate rhythms, courtesy of drummer Sal Cortez and bassist Agustin Sanchez, are enhanced by Andrew Ampaya's opportune piano work and Ryan Levine's heartfelt vocals. Songs like "New Year" and "This Year (I hope we fall in love)" are the playful, bouncing tracks that are structurally immaculate and serve as the band's lifeblood. Thematically, The Burning Hour touches upon love, longing, and life's highs and lows, while safely avoiding its hollow extremities. Always poised amidst a sense of completion between the extremes of emotional propinquity and keyed-up delirium, this delivery is sure to win.

Unshakeable to the hilt, The Burning Hour is long and bright. This simply stunning collection is fitting for an energized vacation. So take some time with Californian boys Test Your Reflex.
