Sweet Bills (Kristoffer Ragnstam)
by Bailey Pennick posted February 27, 2008
Swedish pop rock musician Kristoffer Ragnstam's Sweet Bills is easily one of the strongest albums of the year. From his humble beginnings as a fifteen-year-old who could barely play the drums, Ragnstam proves that he has finally unleashed his musical talent throughout the album's thirteen songs. Ragnstam has been flying under the radar with his music for years, but with the release of Sweet Bills (produced by Radiohead's Chris Brown), everyone will know his name-and for good reason.

Sweet Bills is an album that transcends any specific genre of rock; each song is unique, with musical influences that touch on the last four decades in pop music. After the simple 42-second "Intro," Ragnstam launches into "Breakfast by the Mattress," an upbeat track with a good sound and solid drumming, reminiscent of a good Voxtrot single. Within each song, different aspects of Ragnstam's voice are developed. The track "Man Overboard," followed by "Lonely Lane" and "#1 Money Hunter," proves that Kristoffer Ragnstam is a versatile performer. "#1 Money Hunter" showcases Beck's "Debra"-style vocals and heavy guitar distortion, while in "Never Get Used to You," Kristoffer has a raspier voice with a fast pop sound. The highlight of the entire album comes with the ninth track, "Too Close to the Curb." The beat and intense guitar starts off strong immediately and continues to drive through to the end.

Sweet Bills is an album that is purely Kristoffer Ragnstam; it's easy to see that each song embodies a different mood and time in his life. Ragnstam is very proud of the album-and he should be. "It's very intimate-naked, even. I'm not trying to be smart or anything. I'm just doing what comes naturally. Sweet Bills is one-hundred-percent me." With track after track of electrifying and universally appealing beats, it's hard to dislike Sweet Bills.
