Ladytron live at The Glass House
by Taylor Stacey posted October 30, 2006
Having seen Ladytron once before at a much larger venue and with a much more inebriated audience, seeing them at Pomona's Glass House seemed almost too tranquil an experience. With red lights and thick fog, Ladytron started off their set well. Their heavy techno melodies are overlaid with rhythmic and monotonous lyrics. For the first few songs only Helen Marnie, the band's primary vocalist, sang. When joined by Mira Aroyo, the second vocalist and keyboardist, the show took on a new element. Aroyo's lower harmonies added a heaviness to the songs and complemented Marnie's light feminine vocals. This darker aspect of Ladytron's music is not as apparent in their album as when Ladytron is live. In addition to the new weight of the songs, Aroyo's vocal presence allowed for the two girls to work together in putting on a show. Together, with their stiff, mechanical dancing and singing on the drummer's platform, the show was enlived by heightened stage presence.

The Ladytron show was satisfying-the band played well and kept the audience entertained. Ladytron, however, may be better suited for larger venues because the intimacy of a small audience tends to keep its members from fully enjoying the quick catchy techno beats and the marvelously monotone style that is Ladytron.
