Animal Collective live at The El Ray
by John Vining posted November 28, 2005
Watching Animal Collective perform is something like watching four hikers drink too many energy drinks and try to find their way to the top of a mountain. These men don't stop for water. These men don't look at maps. They don't necessarily care if they ever get there.
To many people there (who may or may not have been under the influence of illegal substances), this random meandering was exciting and fun. To others the music quickly became repetitive and outright boring. There was no doubt that there was energy on stage. The question is whether or not it was focused in the right place, if anywhere at all.
The members of Animal Collective, who all go by strange stage names (ex: Panda Bear, The Geologist), held themselves onstage unlike any other performers I have ever seen. They spent equal time hitting random drums and fiddling knobs as they did actually playing their instruments. The vocals, like the name suggests, were mainly comprised of animal noises and arbitrary screaming.
I must admit, I went to the show with an expectation of a show similar to the (fairly) structured songs of Feels. Maybe I was just caught off-guard but there was little in the performance that was actually enjoyable, let alone notable. The band only stopped playing once and it felt like an eternity. Much of the audience seemed to view it as a near-religious experience, but just don't expect any "songs" or "structure."
